Native American - Similar & Different

Today we discussed the lifestyles of the Kwakiutl, Nez Perce and Pawnee. Think about the ways these groups lived and how they used the land around them. Choose two groups and respond. How are they similar and how are they different?

The Raft Choice Board


4th Grade Homework
Subject: Reading
Selection: The Raft (pgs. 112-135)
Selection Vocabulary: raft, disgusted, scattered, cluttered, downstream, nuzzle
    Choose 4 of the 6 to complete; Turn in on Friday (August 24, 2012)
Create a book cover from pgs. 110 and 111 (in your reading book). Use index cards to label characters and setting. Your book cover must be detailed. You can use index cards to display key vocabulary.
*   Create a character inference chart for Nicky (The Raft). Be sure to attach an inference statement.
Use construction paper to create a large raft. Using the reading strategies, Making Connections and Questioning. You must identify and label the raft with text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-to world sentences. All three connections should be clearly labeled. You should also write clear and complete, “I wonder why…..? questions. I wonder why Nicky…?; I wonder why grandma…?; I wonder why the author…? I wonder why statements should be at least 3 sentences each. As you write, you should be thinking aloud.
 Use the internet to access www.puzzlemaker.com, to create a criss-cross puzzle for the following terms:  inference, character, setting, plot, raft, scattered, disgusted, cluttered, downstream, nuzzle, event, action, reaction
Write a letter to Nicky telling him why he should appreciate being able to visit his grandma.
Create a flipbook that includes meaningful sentences for your vocabulary words. Remember that a meaningful sentence is not a definition. You must underline the vocabulary word, and circle clues in the sentence that explains the meaning of the word. For example: I will never forget the first time I floated down the river on a raft.

Google Drive - The Google Drive documents appears to not let anyone edit them at this time. Please let me know if you would like to be added to any of the schedules. Hopefully, it's a minor glitch that is only occurring today.

Dine-out - Tomorrow night is SPARK's first Dine-Out of the 2012-2013 school year. Be sure to come out to Yeah! Burger in Va-Hi to help raise money for our school. Billy and I will be there between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Fun Friday - This week's Fun Friday is open. Please let us know if you would love to spend some time with us showing off your talents. The Google Drive document shows someone on the schedule, but it is open.

Today, we "Saved Fred"! Parents, ask your child to describe how they saved a little lone worm floating along in the ocean on his capsized boat. We worked together to rescue the little guy as we recorded our procedures in our science notebooks. Students, I would love for you to write a comment about how you used teamwork to get the job done.
