-Read Sections 1, 2 & 3 of Chapter 6 of Johnny Tremain.
Identify a theme about what you read. Be sure to give evidence from the text. Write using complete sentences.

-Math - Solve 45 x 53  and 876 x 3 using the Partial Product Method. Choose one problem to explain why this method works. You must have a paragraph or more.

Weekly Poem - Ponce de Leon

Ponce de Leon

In fourteen hundred ninety-three,
Ponce de Leon sailed the sea.
(with Columbus)

He became the governor on Hispanola,
 But there was no cola.

He went to Puerto Rico for the same job
And lost it and did sob.

Next he headed off to find the Fountain of Youth
And that's the truth.

He spent a lot of time in Florida, it would seem.
Because he discovered the Gulf Stream.

He tried to start a colony near Sanibel
Oh well.

The natives fought him under the sun
And he died in 1521.

Fun Friday - Fly Fishing (10-26-12)

Caroline and her dad taught us all about fly fishing. We learned about the different types of lures, how to make a lure and how to cast a line. I hope you enjoy your own lure that you got! New hobby, anybody?

Weekly Poem - What Makes Columbus a Hero

What Makes Columbus a Hero

In 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed

And the sailors in the back with their buckets bailed

Because the ships they sailed in were leaky old boats

And the maps they had were very sketchy notes

An entire ocean they had to get across

And the truth is most of the time they were lost

They were looking for India, they didn't find it

But they found the Americas, so they didn't mind it

But they kept track of the journey, west and north

And they figured out how to get back and forth

If anyone asks you what did Columbus really do

Tell them he sailed to America, but he came back, too

Weekly Poem - Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama

From Portugal did da Game sail

For he was determined not to fail.

At discovering an ocean route around Good Hope

In Africa, he was able to cope.

With unhappy people along the way,

He traded but was not always willing to pay.

To India, da Gama did next go

Bust he had to leave quickly so

There weren't many goods inside

His ship and many crewman died

However, da Gama was a hero in name

And provided him money and fame.

-Select 5 words from Johnny Tremain that are unfamiliar or you are unsure of the meaning. 
1. Write the word down and the page number you found it on.
2. Find the meaning (definition) for each word.
3. Write the word in a new sentence.

-Weekly Poem - All students are required to memorize and recite the poem on Monday, October 22, 2012.
